Copper sulfate appears as a greenish-white crystalline solid. Its pentahydrate form is a blue powder, granule or deep blue crystalline substance. The molecular weight is 159.60 for the anhydrous form and 249.70 for the pentahydrate. The pentahydrate boils at 150℃ and loses 25 molecules of water; it decomposes at about 110℃ releasing 24 water molecules. Anhydrous copper sulfate breaks down into copper oxide at 650℃. According to the NFPA-704 M rating system, its hazard profile is Health 2, Flammability 0, Reactivity 0. It dissolves readily in water to form a vivid blue solution.

Product Application
Also known as blue vitriol, copper sulfate is produced by reacting sulfuric acid with metallic copper. Its bright blue crystals dissolve in water and alcohol. When blended with ammonia, it was used in liquid filter formulations. A common application is combining it with potassium bromide to make copper bromide bleach for photo intensification and toning. Some photographers used it as a restrainer in ferrous sulfate developers for the collodion process.
