Description

Epichlorohydrin is an organochlorine compound and epoxide widely used as an industrial solvent. With high chemical reactivity, it serves as a key raw material for manufacturing glycerol, plastics, epoxy adhesives, resins, and elastomers. It is also used in producing glycidyl nitrate and alkali metal chlorides, acts as a solvent for cellulose, resins, and coatings, and functions as an insect fumigant. In biochemistry, it is applied as a crosslinking agent for preparing Sephdex size‑exclusion chromatography resins. It is classified as a potential carcinogen and may cause adverse effects on the respiratory tract and kidneys. Product Application

Bisphenol A epoxy resins are produced from epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A, forming bisphenol‑A diglycidyl ether, the basic monomer of such epoxy resins. Sensitization to epichlorohydrin is most common among workers in the epoxy resin industry, while cases among the general public are rare. Reported non‑occupational cases include exposure to soil fumigants, solvent cements, and pharmaceutical manufacturing workers involved in drug synthesis. Epichlorohydrin was used in producing propranolol and oxprenolol.
