Description

Calcium Stearate#1592-23-0

Calcium stearate is also referred to as calcium octadecanoate. It appears as a pale white crystalline powder. Its chemical formula is (C17H35COO)2Ca, with a molecular weight of 607.00. The melting point ranges from 179 to 180 °C, and it decomposes when heated. It is insoluble in water, cold ethanol, and diethyl ether, while soluble in hot benzene, toluene, and turpentine. It is slightly soluble in hot ethanol and diethyl ether. It reacts with strong acids and decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding calcium salt. It absorbs moisture from air and is resistant to lipolytic microorganisms.Calcium Stearate

Calcium stearate serves as a flow agent in various powder products, including certain foods like Smarties. It acts as a surface conditioner in hard candies such as Sprees, a waterproofing agent for textiles, and a lubricant for pencils and crayons.

In the concrete industry, calcium stearate is used to control efflorescence in cementitious materials for manufacturing concrete masonry units such as pavers and blocks, while also providing waterproofing effects.
