Description

Sodium 4-aminosalicylate dihydrate is a frequently used anti-tuberculosis pharmaceutical, also referred to as PAS-Na. It appears as a white or off-white crystalline powder, odorless with a sweet-salty taste. It dissolves readily in water, is slightly soluble in ethanol, poorly soluble in acetone, and nearly insoluble in diethyl ether, chloroform, and benzene. A 2% water solution shows a pH of 6.5–8. Aqueous solutions tend to degrade and form m-aminophenol, so fresh preparation is required before use.Sodium 4-aminosalicylate dihydrate

Product Application

It is indicated for pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This agent is only active against mycobacteria and shows no effect on non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Resistance develops rapidly when used alone, so it must be combined with other anti-tuberculosis medications. Combined use with streptomycin and isoniazid can delay the emergence of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis to these two drugs.
