Nicarbazin presents as a pale yellow crystalline powder with no odor. It decomposes at 265–275°C. It does not absorb moisture and is insoluble in water, ethanol, chloroform, or diethyl ether; it is sparingly soluble in dimethylformamide. When mixed with water and ground, it decomposes gradually, and breaks down more rapidly in dilute acidic conditions.

Nicarbazin is classified as a coccidiostat, an antiprotozoal compound that targets Coccidia parasites. It also functions as a contraceptive for resident Canada geese and waterfowl. It is widely used in avian reproduction research to disrupt the development of the vitelline (yolk) membrane in avian eggs. Additionally, it is employed to investigate how administration routes influence plasma concentrations of 4,4′-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC), the primary active anticoccidial ingredient in nicarbazin.
