Lead monoxide, with the chemical name Lead(II) oxide (oxide of lead (II)), has the chemical formula PbO and a molecular weight of 223.20 g/mol. Its CAS number is 1317-36-8. Commonly known as litharge, massicot or yellow lead, it is the +2 valence oxide of lead.

Product Details

Lead(II) oxide also known as litharge (CAS 1317-36-8) is an industrial grade chemical with purity no less than 99%. It appears as a yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder with no obvious odor. Its melting point is 888℃, boiling point is 1470℃ with decomposition during heating. Vapor pressure reaches 0.13Pa at 20℃, and relative density is 9.53 at 20℃. This substance is insoluble in water, soluble in acetic acid and nitric acid, and slightly soluble in alkaline solutions. It remains stable under normal conditions but is incompatible with strong reducing agents and concentrated acids.

Product Application of Lead monoxide CAS#1317-36-8

It is widely used in ointments and plasters, and for preparing lead subacetate solutions. It serves as a glazing agent for pottery, a flux for porcelain and glass painting, and a raw material for lead glass production. It is applied in varnishes, and used with glycerol to make metal cement. It can create iridescent colors on brass and bronze surfaces, and dye sulfur-containing materials such as hair, nails, wool and horn. It is used in manufacturing artificial tortoise shell and horn, as a rubber pigment, and in producing boiled linseed oil. Additionally, it is used in the assaying of gold and silver ores.
