Hexane is a linear-chain saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon with molecular formula C6H14 and molecular weight 86.2. It appears as a colorless, volatile liquid with a typical gasoline‑like odor. Produced from crude oil via cracking and fractional distillation, hexane has a melting point of −95 °C and boiling point of 68.95 °C. Its vapor density is 2.97 relative to air.

Practically insoluble in water, hexane is highly soluble in organic solvents including chloroform, diethyl ether, and ethanol. As a widely used industrial solvent, hexane is essential in the production of rubber, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, footwear, leather, textiles, furniture, and coatings.
