Barium sulfate features the chemical formula BaSO4. It appears as colorless or white orthorhombic crystals, with a molar mass of 233.4, relative density 4.5 at 15 ℃, melting point 1580 ℃, and refractive index 1.637. When heated to 1149 ℃, it transforms into monoclinic crystals with a refractive index of 1.649. It is nearly insoluble in water, with solubility values of 0.00022 at 18 ℃ and 0.0041 at 100 ℃. It dissolves slightly in concentrated sulfuric acid and can react with alkali metal carbonate solutions to form barium carbonate; it does not dissolve in other acids or bases. In nature, it exists as the mineral barite. When heated together with carbon (coal powder) to 800 ℃, it reduces to soluble barium sulfide and carbon monoxide. It strongly absorbs X‑rays and is X‑ray opaque, so it is used medically as a barium meal for gastrointestinal radiography. Barium sulfate is the only non‑toxic barium salt. It is applied in analytical reagents, electronics, instrumentation, metallurgy, and other sectors. It also serves as a white pigment, X‑ray contrast agent for the stomach, flux for copper, weighting agent for drilling mud, and filler for rubber, paper, and plastics. It is synthesized by reacting sulfuric acid with barium chloride.
Type I barium sulfate: white loose powder, odorless and tasteless.
Type II barium sulfate: refined from barite ore; its barium sulfate content is not less than 97% on a dry basis. It is a white loose powder, odorless and tasteless. Both Type I and Type II barium sulfate are insoluble in water, organic solvents, acids, and sodium hydroxide solution. It contains 58.85% barium.
