Diethylene glycol boasts diverse industrial applications. It is an ingredient in antifreeze, brake fluids, cosmetics, inks, and drying agents, and also functions as a plasticizer. It is used in antifreeze solutions for sprinkler systems and water seals for gas tanks (water blended with 40% diethylene glycol freezes at -18°C; with 50% at -28°C); serves as a lubricating and finishing agent for wool, worsted, cotton, rayon, and silk; acts as a solvent for vat dyes; and is added to composition corks, glues, gelatin, casein, and pastes to resist drying.
