Description

Benzene is a colorless, volatile, highly flammable liquid widely applied in the chemical industry and attracted great attention in the early development of organic chemistry. Thanks to its unique structure, benzene exhibits high stability and rarely undergoes addition reactions under normal conditions. Addition reactions of benzene usually demand high temperature, high pressure and special catalysts. The most frequent reactions of benzene are substitution reactions, in which one or more hydrogen atoms can be replaced by various atoms or atomic groups. Product Application of Benzene CAS#71-43-2
Benzene exists in distillates of coal and coal tar, as well as petroleum products like gasoline. It can also be detected in gases and leachates from landfills containing industrial waste, construction debris and gardening refuse. Trace levels of benzene, toluene, xylene and other volatile organic compounds have been detected in soil and groundwater near many municipal landfills. Studies have evaluated benzene exposure during operations such as removal, cleaning, pumping and testing of underground gasoline storage tanks. Average human exposure ranged from 0.43 to 3.84 ppm within 1.5 to 6 hours, and the maximum short‑term (15‑minute) exposure reached 9.14 ppm. Benzene is also present in tobacco smoke, which may increase the risk of inhalation exposure.

Benzene serves as a solvent for waxes, resins and oils; a paint remover; a thinner for lacquers; a raw material in manufacturing dyes, pharmaceuticals, varnishes and linoleum; and a fundamental feedstock for producing many organic compounds.
