N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a polar solvent applied in organic synthesis and polymer chemistry. Its large‑scale industrial uses include recovery and purification of acetylenes, olefins, and diolefins, gas purification, and aromatics extraction from raw materials. As a flexible industrial solvent, NMP is currently authorized only for veterinary pharmaceutical applications. Studies on its distribution and metabolism in rats help clarify the toxicological profile of this chemical, to which human exposure is expected to rise.
