Polypropylene glycol is a polymeric material with the formula H(C3H6O)nOH. It appears as a colorless to light yellow viscous liquid, with low volatility and no corrosive properties. Commercial grades usually have molecular weights from 400 up to 2050. Low‑molar‑mass grades are soluble in water, while higher‑molar‑mass grades show limited water solubility but dissolve in oils, hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, and esters. The terminal hydroxyl groups can undergo esterification to form monoesters or diesters; monoesters act as nonionic surfactants and can react with alcohols to form ethers. It serves as a solvent for vegetable oils, resins, and paraffins, and is used in manufacturing alkyd resins, emulsifiers, demulsifiers, lubricants, and plasticizers. It is synthesized by condensing propylene oxide with propylene glycol under high pressure or using acidic catalysts.
