Melamine‑formaldehyde resin (MFR) serves as a key component in high‑strength reinforced plaster materials. Cases of skin sensitization have been documented in plaster technicians applying resin‑reinforced casts and in dental technicians using MFR‑containing dental plasters. As a textile finishing resin, it has also been identified as an allergen in retail workers handling treated garments. MFR may release formaldehyde, which can act as the primary sensitizing agent. Melamine is a white crystalline organic compound featuring a six‑membered heterocyclic ring with alternating carbon and nitrogen atoms, substituted by three amino groups. Its polycondensation with formaldehyde or other aldehydes yields melamine resins, which are widely used thermosetting polymers.

Melamine is widely used in manufacturing high‑pressure laminate resins (such as decorative countertops), molding compounds (including tableware), and surface coating resins (used in appliance and automotive topcoats). Other major applications include textile and paper processing resins. It is also used in adhesive resins for lumber, plywood, and flooring, as well as tanning agents for leather. Melamine and its derivatives such as melamine cyanurate are among the most widely used nitrogen‑based flame retardants. Melamine acts as a flame‑retardant additive in polypropylene and polyethylene, while melamine cyanurate is commercially used for flame retardancy in polyamides and terephthalate polymers.
