Ethyl acetoacetate serves as a key raw material in organic synthesis. In pesticide manufacturing, it is used to prepare intermediates including α-chloroethyl acetoacetate for the organophosphorus insecticide coumaphos, 2-methoxy-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine for pyrimidinoxam, 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine for diazinon, as well as intermediates for pirimicarb, oxazolidinone, imipenem, coumarin, and warfarin. It is also an intermediate for novel fungicides like cyprodinil, difulmetorim, furammetpyr, and the plant growth regulator cintofen. Additionally, ethyl acetoacetate is widely applied in pharmaceuticals, plastics, dyes, fragrances, varnishes, and additives.
