It is an aromatic volatile oil derived through distillation or extraction from resin exuded by Pinus massoniana Lamb, Pinus tabulaeformis Carr., and other congeneric tree species. It emits a characteristic pine‑like aroma and consists mainly of a hydrocarbon blend rich in terpene compounds. Based on raw material origin, turpentine can be categorized into four main types: gum turpentine, wood turpentine, sulfate turpentine, and carbonized turpentine.
