Description

Sodium peroxydisulfate is another name for sodium persulfate. It appears as a white crystalline or powdery solid with no smell or taste. Its molecular formula is Na2S2O8 and molecular weight is 238.13. This compound decomposes slowly at room temperature, while heating or exposure to ethanol accelerates its breakdown, releasing oxygen and forming sodium pyrosulfate. Moisture and various metal ions including platinum black, silver, lead, iron, copper, magnesium, nickel, manganese and their alloys can speed up decomposition. At around 200°C, it breaks down quickly and releases hydrogen peroxide. It dissolves well in water (70.4 g at 20°C). It is a strong oxidizing agent and can severely irritate the skin; long-term contact may trigger allergic reactions. Careful handling is required. The oral LD50 value in rats is 895 mg/kg. It must be stored in sealed containers. In laboratory settings, sodium persulfate is produced by heating ammonium persulfate with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate solution to eliminate ammonia and carbon dioxide.Sodium persulfate
